5 Google Business Profile Mistakes That Are Costing You Customers
Most local businesses have an incomplete or incorrect Google Business Profile. Here are the 5 mistakes that hurt your rankings — and how to fix them today.
Your Google Business Profile Is Your Most Valuable Free Marketing Tool
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that appears when someone searches for your business or a business like yours on Google or Google Maps. It's completely free — and most local businesses are leaving serious money on the table by not optimizing it.
Here are the 5 most common mistakes we see when we audit local businesses.
Mistake #1: Incomplete Business Information
Google rewards completeness. If your hours, phone number, website, or address are missing or wrong, Google will rank you lower — and customers will go elsewhere.
Fix it: Log into your Google Business Profile and fill in every single field. Make sure your business name, address, and phone number exactly match what's on your website.
Mistake #2: No Photos (or Outdated Photos)
Listings with photos receive 42% more requests for directions and 35% more website clicks than those without. This is one of the easiest wins available.
Fix it: Upload at least 10 high-quality photos: your storefront, interior, products or services, your team, and happy customers (with permission). Add new photos monthly.
Mistake #3: Wrong Business Category
Your primary category tells Google what you are. Picking the wrong one — or being too generic — means you won't show up for the searches that matter most.
Fix it: Research your competitors' categories. Pick the most specific primary category that fits your business, then add relevant secondary categories.
Mistake #4: Not Responding to Reviews
Google's algorithm considers engagement. Businesses that respond to reviews — both positive and negative — rank higher than those that don't.
Fix it: Respond to every review within 24-48 hours. Thank positive reviewers specifically. Address negative reviews professionally and offer to resolve the issue.
Mistake #5: No Posts or Updates
Google Business Profile allows you to post updates, offers, events, and new products. Most businesses never use this feature — which means you can easily stand out by doing so.
Fix it: Post at least once per week. Share a promotion, a before/after, a tip, or a customer story. Each post keeps your listing fresh and signals to Google that you're an active business.
How Much Is an Unoptimized Profile Costing You?
If your business gets even 10 extra visits per month from better Google visibility, and your average customer is worth $100, that's $1,000/month in additional revenue — just from fixing your free Google listing.
